Jalan Petaling Market & Chinatown KL
Jalan Petaling Market is perhaps KL’s most well-known and visited market, located in Chinatown it offers a characterful destination bustling with life and activity. It’s also well known for copy-goods and fakes but you can also find genuine seconds and local crafts.
Often referred to as Chinatown Market, presents a different shopping experience for day to night, until 4 or 5pm every day Jalan Petaling is just a normal shop-lined street in Chinatown, after that the area is closed off to traffic and it transforms into a Pasar Malam (night market).
The opening hours of the market are listed as 11AM to 10:30PM but I have always found there it be much more interesting in the afternoon and into the night. Much cooler too but also much busier.
Many of the daytime stalls pack up and are replaced by partly roofed stalls on the street, those stalls specialize in selling fake designer goods. Perfume, watches, clothes, wallets, hangbags, and a profusion of pirated CDs and DVDs, they all are sold openly.
The fixed prices are very few, and the prices set by the dealer are unreasonably high, buyers are expected to negotiate, for serious buyer, the better thing to do is to browse around and get the price from different dealers and chose the lowest offer to negotiate. Both the day and night markets attract large crowds and visitors must be careful of their belongings.
