Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square symbolizes the end of Colonial rule as it was here that Malaysia claimed independence (merdeka) on August 31st, 1957. The area features Royal Selangor Club (built in 1884), St. Mary’s Church, Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Cop’s Fountain, and the tallest flagpole in the world (95m).

Merdeka Square was once the Selagnor Cricket Club pitch and is now a beautiful manicured ground and symbol of independence. Beneath the square, you will find Plaza Dataran Merdeka (

How to Get There:

You can take the Sri Petaling Line or the Kelana Jaya Line to Masjid Jamek LRT Station. The square is a short walk from the station.
