Sales Tax in KL

Currently in Malaysia some goods are exempt from sales tax whereas others are charged anywhere between 5-15% and there can also be a separate Service Tax.

For food and accommodation, a Service Tax of 10 percent at luxury hotels and restaurants is added to the final bill. This may not be included in the advertised or quoted price, it’s just added when you go to pay the bill. Some hotels will also add a ‘hotel tax’ of maybe 5% too. If unsure when getting prices, ask if the quoted price includes service tax.

This all looks set to change with a single goods and service tax (GST) expected to be introduced by the end of 2011.
